2022 Progress Report

At PHA, we’re strategic, informed conveners at the intersection of food policy and public health. We’re inspiring organizations from every sector - government, business, philanthropy, and nonprofits - to use their power to advance health outcomes around the country. We all need to stand together to build a better food future.

Partner Spotlight: Instacart

Instacart has pledged to bring 10 million servings of produce to nutrition insecure families across the US over the next three years through fundraising campaigns, joint programming, and new technology offerings as part of its Instacart Health initiative launched alongside the White House Conference on Hunger, Nutrition, and Health on September 28, 2022.

Our partnership with Instacart illustrates the power of what’s possible when we collaborate to make nutritious food more accessible. In an effort to continue increasing vegetable and fruit consumption nationwide, we’re partnering with the City of Indianapolis, the Indianapolis Community Food Access Coalition, and Instacart to provide families living in under-resourced communities with the opportunity to get fresh produce from grocery stores that were once completely out of reach for them.

The program provided 640 families with 10 weeks of free produce boxes followed by a complimentary Instacart+ membership and $50/month for 3 consecutive months of “Fresh Funds” stipends to purchase produce through Instacart.

This Fresh Funds partnership in Indianapolis is just the beginning. Instacart and PHA plan to expand this work to more cities across the country in 2023 and beyond, ensuring that accessible, affordable, and nutritious food is the standard for families across the country — not the exception.

Partner Spotlight: KinderCare Learning Centers

As a longstanding partner, KinderCare has been at the forefront of providing more nutritious food for our youngest eaters since 2018. They’ve continued to build on that commitment, and pledged to double the servings of vegetables to over 40,000 school-aged children in 300 cities nationwide by 2025.

Partner Spotlight: Keurig Dr Pepper and Stop & Shop

Connecting every family, in every zip code to good food and beverages is no small feat. It requires all of us to come together to change our food system for the better. That’s why PHA partnered with Stop & Shop and Keurig Dr Pepper (KDP) on an innovative pilot program to market healthier beverage options in an under-resourced community.

The pilot, which kicked off on August 19, 2022, tested in-store marketing and merchandising strategies to prioritize the placement of KDP’s Better-For-You beverages in a Stop & Shop location in the Roxbury neighborhood of Boston, Massachusetts. The Better-For-You beverage brands include Core Hydration, Bai, Evian, Snapple and Polar.

During the pilot program, beverage sales – and better-for-you beverage sales – increased. Those results were impacted by a store remodel and grand reopening during that same time period, so further testing is needed to determine the precise impact. Sales of Guiding Stars products, which are products that have 1, 2, or 3 stars based on Stop & Shop’s easy-to-use rating system that helps customers make nutritious choices, also showed solid growth at the pilot store. Sales of KDP Guiding Stars products in particular increased significantly, showing that when healthier options are more visible and more heavily promoted - more people will choose them.
