    Commitment Element

By December 31, 2023, NAMA agrees to work with their participating companies to encourage them to voluntarily increase the percentage of better-for-you offerings available within these members’ portfolio of vending machines from 24% to 33%.

    Progress To Date

The average share of vending machine offerings that met the NAMA standard in the current year’s analysis has remained roughly flat since the commitment was launched in late 2019. The actual numbers are not perfectly comparable due to differences in the set of operators reporting data for each of the analyses. In particular, this year’s analysis included the addition of two large national, conveniences services operators. These operators joined the voluntary industry initiative after the initial baseline assessment was conducted, and their data have not been included in previous analyses. Their addition significantly expanded the scope of the initiative. It also lowered the overall average share of products that meet the nutrition standard in an average machine. When including all operators, 23% of offerings in an average vending machine met the nutrition standard. When examining only the operators who participated in the previous assessment, the average compliance level remains perfectly flat at 23.6% and virtually the same as the 24% 2019 baseline. For beverage only machines, the share of beverage offerings meeting the NAMA standard remained steady at 38%. For snack only machines, the percentage remained at 8%. For mixed machines the average share of compliant offerings was 22%.

Partner Statement

Since NAMA and the convenience services industry began its commitment with the Partnership for a Healthier America (PHA), we’ve remained steadfast in our goal to significantly increase the percentage of healthier offerings in America’s vending machines. NAMA is pleased to report that 2022 saw the addition of several new convenience services operators to this initiative—including two large national companies—expanding existing efforts and significantly broadening the reach of the commitment’s participant base and its potential impact.

As they’ve emerged from the COVID-19 pandemic, NAMA members have gained valuable insights into consumer behavior, preferences and demand for better-for-you products. And while operators have faced lingering supply chain issues with product availability, NAMA has developed new tools—such as a Product Calculator—to assist participants in identifying new items aligned with commitment goals. NAMA looks forward to working with individual member companies on their unique client and product profiles to accomplish our shared mission.

NAMA is excited to continue its partnership with PHA, support our growing base of industry participants, and engage with even more operators to join our cause. Together, we are driven to create a healthier future for individuals and communities across America by promoting and providing accessible, nutritious choices in vending machines.
