Committed to incorporating front-of-package nutrition labels on all private label products and ensuring that at least 55 percent of private label brands achieve 1, 2 or 3 stars through the Guiding Stars nutrition labeling program. Giant Food will also bring FNV, PHA’s marketing campaign that uses unique creative and celebrities to drive consumption of fruits and vegetables, to over 90 stores in the District of Columbia, Maryland and Virginia area.

    Commitment Element

    At least 55% of Giant's private label brands will achieve 1, 2 or 3 stars through the Guiding Stars program. Guiding Stars is an easy to understand nutritional rating system for products that uses a patented algorithm to help consumers identify more nutritional options.

    Progress To Date

    As of December 2018, 8,022 of Giant's 8,384 (96%) private label brand products were rated using the Guiding Stars program. Of these, 3,384 products (42%) received a rating of 1, 2, or 3 stars.

    Commitment Element

    100% of Giant's private label brands will carry front-of-pack nutrition information. This information will include calories, saturated fat, sodium and total sugars and serves to help consumers easily identify key nutritional information in order to identify healthier options.

    Progress To Date

    Giant submitted front-of-pack information for 19 of the 26 (73%) private label brand items randomly selected for review. Of the 19 items, 9 items (47%) had all front-of-pack nutrition information, including calories, saturated fat, sodium, and total sugars. Fourteen items (74%) had calories, 10 items (53%) had saturated fat, 11 items (58%) had sodium, and 9 items (47%) had total sugars on front-of-pack labels.

    Commitment Element

    Giant will bring FNV to Giant stores in the DC, Maryland and Virginia area. At its cost, Giant will run this campaign in over 90 stores for a period of 6 months.

    Progress To Date

    Giant launched the FNV campaign in 164 DC, Maryland, and Virginia Giant stores in January 2019. The campaign promotes fruits and vegetables using in-store signage and features local athletes, including Washington Wizards' Bradley Beal, Washington Mystics' Elena Delle Donne, and Washington Capitols' T.J. Oshie.
