    Implement a comprehensive, strategic product placement/merchandizing program/policy within dining venues to encourage healthier food consumption

    Progress To Date

    SUNY Cortland implemented a strategic product placement and merchandising program in The Bistro and Neubig residential dining facilities in January of 2018. The program employs a number of strategies to promote consumption of healthier options including offering vegetables, whole grains and plant based proteins first in serving stations; displaying fresh fruit in attractive self-serve containers; providing fruit, vegetable, and herb infused water stations to reduce sugary beverage consumption and flavor stations featuring low-sodium seasoning and spices to reduce intake of high sodium condiments and table salt. The University also encourages appropriate portion sizes with smaller plates and cups and markets healthy options through tabling events, print and digital signage and social media.

    SUNY Cortland has posted signage requiring cars to stop or yield for pedestrians at all 14 marked crosswalks on the University campus.

    Offer a bicycle share/rental program and/or a subsidized bicycle purchase program for all individuals on campus.

    Progress To Date

    The Cortland Bike Project offers three different bike share options for individuals on campus. Students, faculty and staff may check out a free bike for one week at a time, rent a commuter bike for a semester or rent a mountain bike for the day. All bikes are provided with a lock, helmet and bell.

    In 2017, SUNY Cortland received the Bronze level Bicycle Friendly University designation by the League of American Bicyclists.

    Implement a campus-wide program/policy that incentivizes the use of public or campus provided transportation.

    Progress To Date

    SUNY Cortland incentivizes the use of alternative transportation by providing free bus service and a bus tracking app to all students and staff, and by encouraging its bike-sharing program, zipcar services, weekend bus transportation and carpooling.

    SUNY Cortland provides students with free access to the Student Life Center recreational facility for 17.7 hours per day, on average, each week.

    Dedicate at least seventy-five percent (75%) of the primary campus recreation center floor space to areas for physical activity.

    Progress To Date

    SUNY Cortland's recreation facility at the Student Life Center provides 70,071 square feet of floor space dedicated to physical activity, representing 76% of the total facility square footage. Physical activity spaces include a multi-activity court, a 3 court gymnasium, cardio, circuit and free weight training areas, a golf simulator, group fitness classrooms, a climbing wall and a three lane indoor track.

    SUNY Cortland offers a diverse range of recreation, physical activity and competitive sports opportunities each year including 10 unique group fitness classes, 24 different intramural opportunities, 30 club sports, outdoor trips and pursuits, a mind body program featuring 8 types of yoga classes, a cross training fitness program and a climbing wall with regular clinics and competitions.

    Offer a rental outdoor recreation equipment program for students.

    Progress To Date

    SUNY Cortland's Outdoor Pursuits program offers a range of outdoor rental equipment at a nominal fee. Equipment options are available for biking, hiking, camping, paddling, climbing and winter sports.

    Offer at least twenty (20) outdoor recreation clinics and/or trips during each academic year.

    Progress To Date

    NY Cortland's Outdoor Pursuits trips and workshops are available to all students, faculty and staff and vary in length between hours, days, overnights, weekends and longer during school breaks. Programs offer a range of activities and are geared for participation at any level of ability. During the 2017-2018 school year, 40 different outdoor trips and workshops were offered.

    Make available certified personal trainers for all students.

    Progress To Date

    SUNY Cortland provides access to six certified personal trainers. An additional 17 trainers are pursuing a certification. Students may participate in individual or partner sessions for a nominal fee.

    Commitment Element

    Implement a service learning program available to all students that focuses on food and nutrition and/or physical activity/movement and/or coaching.

    Progress To Date

    SUNY Cortland offers a wide range of Applied Learning courses with more than 50 offerings focused on health, food and nutrition, physical activity or coaching. The Health Promotion Internship, available to all majors, requires students to assist with planning, promotion and implementation of campus health and wellness projects and programs. To complete the internship, students must attend wellness committee meetings, participate in wellness programming and complete a reflection writing assignment to review their experience. The internship opportunity is available for 3 or 16 credit hours.
