Commits to make available key resources to its members to help determine how they can carry additional healthier choices, as well as provide promotional materials related to Drink Up, PHA’s marketing campaign to encourage water consumption. NACS also will provide healthier catering options at its events, including the NACS Show, one of the 40 largest trade shows in the United States.

    Add PHA partnership information to the NACS website and NACS membership materials.

    Progress To Date

    The National Association of Convenience Stores promotes its partnership with PHA through direct emails to association members and via its website with a dedicated page outlining partnership details. In 2019, a video was added which provides an overview of its partnership with PHA and highlights National Association of Convenience Stores members who have also joined PHA.

    Each year of the commitment term, make the recommendation in a minimum of one NACS Board meeting and through at least one email communication that U.S.-based retail members with 50 stores on the NACS Board pursue a PHA commitment.

    In 2019, the National Association of Convenience Stores President and CEO Henry Armour discussed PHA membership and benefits during the annual Board of Directors' Executive Committee members meeting and sent an email to 31 Association members encouraging PHA membership and participation in the PHA Summit.

    In 2019, the National Association of Convenience Stores made thirteen email introductions between PHA and individual retail, distributor or supplier companies in an effort to secure PHA commitments.

    Develop in coordination with PHA a simplified framework for smaller chains with 50 stores to voluntarily adopt. Make framework available to NACS retail members with 50 stores, and package together with NACS member resources.

    Progress To Date

    The National Association of Convenience Stores developed a checklist for smaller chains to promote healthier products and practices. The resource titled, “7 Tips to Grow Sales of Better-For-You Options” is available as a featured resource in the Healthy Options section of the Association website alongside other health promoting resources, reports and news articles.

    Commitment Element

    Create a resource that identifies product categories and non-brand specific products (i.e. nuts, dried fruit) that meet the PHA Healthier Food and Beverage Product Criteria and make available to all members.

    Progress To Date

    The Healthier Category Guide identifies each category and subcategory in the National Association of Convenience Stores “Category Definitions and Numbering Guide” and defines products and items that may meet the PHA Healthier Food and Beverage Product Criteria. The Guide directs Association members to also use the PHA Product Calculator for confirmation in product categories where not all items meet PHA Criteria. The Guide is available to all members in the Healthy Options section of the Association website alongside other health promoting resources, reports and news articles.

    Create a resource focused on breakfast with guidance on product positioning, marketing and foodservice and packaged product options for retailer members that meets the PHA Healthier Recipe or Healthier Food and Beverage Product Criteria.

    Progress To Date

    The National Association of Convenience Stores Magazine cover story for January 2020, titled "Rise and Shine", provided guidance on healthy breakfast opportunities for c-store retail members. The article will be available to the public in April of 2020. A follow up podcast with the author was also recorded to discuss additional suggestions on healthier breakfast promotions, product placement and foodservice and packaged product options.

    Commitment Element

    Create a year-long Corner Store Forum program to include in-person meeting(s) and webinar(s) on topics including opportunities and strategies around generating sales through healthier offerings.

    Progress To Date

    In 2019, the National Association of Convenience Stores hosted two Corner Store Forums and one webinar on healthy food and retail interventions. Twenty-five different partners attended the two Forums and 17 participated in the webinar.

    Develop a toolkit or set of resources for corner store stakeholders and owners that draws from NACS member experiences offering healthier items in their stores and distribute to Corner Store Forum program participants.

    Progress To Date

    The National Association of Convenience Stores developed an online community portal to allow National Corner Store Forum members to communicate on a variety of topics including community programs, partnerships, SNAP and WIC policy, store operations, product procurement and distribution, marketing and promotion and upcoming Forum meetings and webinars. National Corner Store Forum members also have access to a suite of resources on the provided in print and digital format at the Forum meeting in October 2019 and available as needed on the Association website.

    Notify all NACS employees and attendees of opportunity to use mile tracker mobile application at NACS Headquarters Office year-round, and before and during NACS Show, to raise funds in support of PHA.

    Progress To Date

    The National Association of Convenience Stores organized a Giving Week for staff members in July 2019. Charity Miles was highlighted as one of the philanthropy options encouraged.

Partner Statement

In 2017, NACS became the first retail-focused association to sign a commitment with PHA and continues to innovate in finding new ways that advance our organizations’ similar goals beyond the structure of the three-year commitment. We have completed all of our commitment elements and have delivered meaningful resources to NACS retailer and supplier members that have helped lead to favorable change within the industry. While our formal commitment has been completed, our commitment to the cause will continue. We look forward to continuing our work with PHA and its partners in enhancing communities across the country.
