Committed to incorporating front-of-package nutrition labels on all private label products and ensuring that at least 55 percent of private label brands achieve 1, 2 or 3 stars through the Guiding Stars nutrition labeling program. Giant Food will also bring FNV, PHA’s marketing campaign that uses unique creative and celebrities to drive consumption of fruits and vegetables, to over 90 stores in the District of Columbia, Maryland and Virginia area.

    Commitment Element

    100% of Giant's private label brands will carry front-of-pack nutrition information. This information will include calories, saturated fat, sodium and total sugars and serves to help consumers easily identify key nutritional information in order to identify healthier options.

    Progress To Date

    Giant submitted front-of-pack information for 20 of the 75 (27%) private label brand items randomly selected for review. Of the 20 items, 13 items (65%) had all front-of-pack nutrition information, including calories, saturated fat, sodium, and total sugars. Seventeen items (85%) had calories, 15 items (75%) had saturated fat, 16 items (80%) had sodium, and 13 items (65%) had total sugars on front-of-pack labels.

    Commitment Element

    Giant will bring FNV to Giant stores in the DC, Maryland and Virginia area. At its cost, Giant will run this campaign in over 90 stores for a period of 6 months.

    Progress To Date

    In 2019, Giant collected data from 164 of its stores that implemented the FNV campaign as part of a broader produce marketing strategy. Compared to the year prior, sales of fresh produce were up during 75% of the year, despite the number of shoppers being down slightly during that time.

    Commitment Element

    At least 55% of Giant's private label brands will achieve 1, 2 or 3 stars through the Guiding Stars program. Guiding Stars is an easy to understand nutritional rating system for products that uses a patented algorithm to help consumers identify more nutritional options.

    Progress To Date

    In 2019, 10,245 of Giant's 10,791 (95%) private label brand products were rated using the Guiding Stars program. Of these, 3,653 products (36%) received a rating of 1, 2, or 3 stars.
