Healthy Hunger Relief

2021 Progress Report

When we began our work with food banks in 2016 — our Healthy Hunger Relief program — we knew from experience that emergency food assistance was the first line of defense against hunger. We were also uniquely positioned to assist food banks in getting the bad food off their shelves and the good food in.

The last year has been a year of incredible growth for our Healthy Hunger Relief work. We more than doubled the number of food bank partners investing in providing better nutrition for the communities they serve.

HEALTHY HUNGER RELIEF INDEX

Launched in 2021, the Healthy Hunger Relief Index is a tool that is meant to help food banks understand and identify progress toward achieving food equity through organizational policies and practices. It includes an internal survey and a personalized progress report to help food banks make lasting health-focused organizational change.

SAMPLE REPORT

During our Food Equity Summit, Pamela Irvine, President and CEO of Feeding Southwest Virginia, and Courtney Kennedy, Director of Nutrition at Good Shepherd Food Bank, discussed the benefits of utilizing the Healthy Hunger Relief Index and how food banks work with PHA to uplift the health and wellbeing of the communities they serve through PHA’s Healthy Hunger Relief work.
