    Progress To Date

    University of Richmond offers at least one wellness meal at breakfast, lunch and dinner at its campus dining venues. Wellness meals are promoted to students, faculty and staff at the point of presentation on menu boards or counter signage.

    University of Richmond offers at least five fruits, five vegetables, and two 100% whole grain options at both lunch and dinner at its Heilman Dining Center, Passport Cafe, Richmond on Broad, Lou's and Tyler's Grill dining locations.

    Commitment Element

    Implement a local food procurement program that increases procurement of local and sustainable foods.

    Progress To Date

    University of Richmond Dining Services is working to reduce its ecological footprint and meet sustainability objectives by purchasing from local vendors whenever possible. The University of Richmond purchases locally grown and manufactured products from more than 60 local vendors, including seasonal fruits and vegetables, Twin Oak’s tofu, Nabisco, Ready Mix biscuit mix, Sabra hummus, Carolina turkey, Smithfield ham, Marva Maid milk, Blanchard’s Coffee and Glenview Farms cheese. Dining Services also works with a local, sustainable seafood company, Profish, to buy the freshest seafood available each week and put it on the menu accordingly. Signage is posted at the Heilman Dining Center highlighting local vendors, where the item is from and in most cases how it was caught or farmed.

    Offer tray-less dining in at least seventy-five percent (75%) of dining venues.

    Progress To Date

    As part of the University of Richmond's Campus Sustainability Plan, Campus Dining has pledged to reduce food waste to the landfill by 50 percent by 2025. Dining Services has implemented tray-less dining in four of its five campus dining venues in support of this pledge.

    Offer a bicycle share/rental program and/or a subsidized bicycle purchase program for all individuals on campus.

    Progress To Date

    The University of Richmond offers two programs to increase student, faculty and staff access to bicycles on campus. The bike share program, launched in the fall of 2009, provides 35 beach cruisers available to all students, faculty and staff for on-campus use. The Outdoor Adventure and Recreation (OAR) program provides six mountain bikes and four commuter bikes available for rental to full-time University of Richmond students and employees. OAR bikes include helmets and locks as part of the rental fee and are available to rent for a day, week or weekend. Commuter bikes also come equipped with a rear folding basket and a bike rack for storage.

    Dedicate at least seventy-five percent (75%) of the primary campus recreation center floor space to areas for physical activity.

    Progress To Date

    University of Richmond has dedicated 75 percent of its 65,000 square foot Weinstein Center for Recreation to areas used for physical activity, including an indoor track, cardio room and court floor.

Partner Statement

The University of Richmond is honored to have completed our second year of our PHA commitment with many campus partner relationships, including Campus Dining Services, Health Promotion, University Recreation and the Office of Sustainability. Our campus has pulled together these key partners to share and work towards a common goal through our PHA commitment. To highlight a few of our 2019 accomplishments, we offer a minimum five (5) types of fruits, five (5) types of vegetables and two (2) 100% whole grain products at both lunch and dinner at most dining facilities. We also offer tray-less dining in at least 75% of our dining venues. We also strive to increase physical activity of our campus community and have secured at least 75% of the primary campus recreation center floor space for areas for physical activity. We continue to work with medical insurance partners and provide comprehensive on-site screening, programming and educational opportunities to our employees. We are looking forward to our upcoming year of commitment with PHA and beyond bringing enhanced services to campus to ensure a healthier community!
