Share Our Strength
In 2011, Share our Strength teamed up with us in support of the Chefs Move to Schools initiative. As part of the collaboration, the organization matched chefs to schools and nonprofit organizations that partner with schools, and participating schools received free cookware kits from PHA’s partner All-Clad. Launched by former First Lady Michelle Obama’s Let’s Move! campaign, Chefs Move to Schools encourages chefs to pair up with local schools to mobilize and excite a new generation of healthy eaters.
By adopting a school, each chef worked with school food professionals, teachers, parents and students to help educate kids about food and nutrition, and help them to make healthier choices. Through this initiative, a total of 724 K-12 schools, preschools, and community programs and organizations serving more than 300,000 youths, received cookware kits. This national effort reached schools and children in 288 cities across 36 states, and nearly half of the cookware kits went to schools where 50% or more of the students were eligible for free or reduced-price school lunch.
In April 2013, Share Our Strength worked with PHA and our partner Birds Eye®, a brand of Pinnacle Foods, on the “Dinner Made Easy” program. The texting program aimed to help low-income Americans, many of whom were recipients of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), get the tools and information they need to make healthier choices.
The “Dinner Made Easy” program sent text messages to subscribers’ mobile devices with cost-saving ideas and tips to make healthy food choices, links to easy recipes and other information to help guide their food shopping experience. Subscribers received incentives to join the program through coupons for healthy Birds Eye® vegetable products and a sweepstakes for prizes.
Several studies show price reductions, through discounts, coupons, etc., can positively affect consumer demand for and consumption of healthy foods
