PHA's Hospital Healthier Food Initiative ensures that hospital patients, employees and visitors have healthful meal options that meet high standards for nutrition.

Commitment:

  • Started on October 6, 2012
  • 3 year commitment

Hospitals are the places we go to get healthy, so the food we eat while there should have a positive impact on our bodies. With this in mind, more than 700 hospital partners across the nation, including Henry Ford Health System, teamed up with PHA to make healthier choices easier.

On October 6, 2012, Henry Ford Health System joined PHA’s Hospital Healthier Food Initiative, partnering with us on our mission to create dramatic and expansive improvements in hospital nutrition. From committing to display only health-promoting food options in cafeteria and menu advertising, to removing all fryers and deep-fat fried products and placing healthier food options within five feet of the checkout, the system’s changes have the potential to reach many.

Making healthy foods easily available for everyone who comes through our doors is an important part of what we do, and we’re glad to help set the national standard for healthy food options in our facilities. This effort is an extension of our ongoing commitment to quality care across our health system, and another step towards our vision of ‘Transforming lives and communities through health and wellness – one person at a time.

~Bethany Thayer, Director of Henry Ford Health System’s Center for Health Promotion and Disease Prevention

At Henry Ford Health System, where more than 1.5 million patient meals and more than 1 million employee and guest meals are served each year, all changes could have a major impact!

More than 700 hospital partners (10 percent of all hospitals nationwide) take part in our Hospital Healthier Food Initiative.
