PHA Statement on HWCF Calorie Commitment

Washington, D.C. — Partnership for a Healthier America (PHA) CEO Lawrence A. Soler released the following statement today in regard to the Healthy Weight Commitment Foundation’s commitment to PHA:

“PHA is pleased with the release of research showing that Healthy Weight Commitment Foundation (HWCF) companies cut more than six trillion calories from their products—far surpassing their original commitment to PHA.

“Additionally, the pioneering study, funded by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF), has created an invaluable tool that will allow everyone working on this issue to better understand what companies are selling and what Americans are buying.

“There is more work to do to achieve our goal of reversing childhood obesity, and we hope HWCF’s commitment will inspire other food and beverage manufacturers, retailers, and all those whose products affect the health of Americans to ensure that healthier choices are easy for busy parents and families—where ever they live, work, or play.”

About PHA: The Partnership for a Healthier America (PHA) is devoted to working with the private sector to ensure the health of our nation’s youth by solving the childhood obesity crisis. In 2010, PHA was created in conjunction with – but independent from – First Lady Michelle Obama’s Let’s Move! effort. PHA is a nonpartisan nonprofit organization that is led by some of the nation’s most respected health and childhood obesity experts. PHA brings together public, private and nonprofit leaders to broker meaningful commitments and develop strategies to end childhood obesity. Most important, PHA ensures that commitments made are commitments kept by working with unbiased, third parties to monitor and publicly report on the progress our partners are making.
