The California Endowment’s FreshWorks Fund

Commitment

Started on June 20, 2011
5 year commitment | View progress

Where you live shouldn’t dictate what you can eat.

That’s why in 2011, the California Endowment’s FreshWorks Fund joined seven other organizations and leading grocery retailers in our efforts to expand access to fresh fruits, vegetables and nutritious foods in neighborhoods where they are lacking.

The California Endowment, through their FreshWorks Fund, committed to provide $200,000,000 for individuals in low-access areas in California, which will create 6,000 jobs.

“Health happens in our neighborhoods. Families can’t eat healthier food if they can’t buy it where they live. The sheer number of banks and other investors involved proves that this is not only the right thing to do to improve the health of our communities, but it’s financially attractive. The more than a dozen partners who made it happen should be congratulated for their vision and collaboration.”

~Robert K Ross, M.D., President and CEO of The California Endowment, at the time of the commitment in 2011.
