Food banks and food pantries play a key role in meeting the nutritional needs of low-income children and families, who have less access to nutritious, affordable foods and are disproportionately impacted by obesity and diet-related disease. Our food bank partners make sure that times of sacrifice don’t also mean sacrificing good health.
Kansas Food Bank will receive support from PHA to implement a comprehensive nutrition ranking system over the next two years. PHA will provide technical assistance to help Kansas Food Bank understand the nutritional quality of its inventory, enhancing food equity for the communities they serve.
The Kansas Food Bank mission is to provide comprehensive and compassionate HungerCare whenever and wherever it is needed to safeguard the health, well-being and productivity of food-insecure Kansas families and their children, as well as senior citizens, the homeless and the chronically ill and impoverished among us.
Kansas Food Bank Warehouse, Inc. started in 1984 serving 16 agencies in Sedgwick Co. Now, Kansas Food Bank serves over 700 hunger-relief partners throughout its 85-county service area, distributing over fifteen million meals last year.
Their programs include the Food 4 Kids weekend backpack program providing over 6,000 packets weekly to chronically hungry children. Bob Boxes designed for seniors who are too proud to ask for help via conventional pantry channels. Mobile Pantries which can delivery food in an efficient manner to underserved areas of the state that lack or have limited pantry service.
Last year, Kansas Food Bank distributed over 4 million pounds of highly nutritious fresh produce giving access to fresh produce to those Kansans who might otherwise not be able to afford this product.
Low-income people are at increased risk for both food insecurity and obesity
