2 year commitment

Food banks and food pantries play a key role in meeting the nutritional needs of low-income children and families, who have less access to nutritious, affordable foods and are disproportionately impacted by obesity and diet-related disease. Our food bank partners make sure that times of sacrifice don’t also mean sacrificing good health.

Great Plains Food Bank will receive support from PHA to implement a comprehensive nutrition ranking system over the next two years. PHA will provide technical assistance to help Great Plains Food Bank understand the nutritional quality of its inventory, enhancing food equity for the communities they serve.

As the only food bank in North Dakota, Great Plains Food Bank has been working to end hunger since 1983. The Great Plains Food Bank is committed to a hunger-free future for our neighbors in North Dakota and Clay County, Minn. Our mission is built upon strong partnerships that increase clients’ access to food while decreasing the barriers they encounter. With service, passion and innovation as our guiding values, we believe that, together, we can end hunger.

We depend on our partner network in over 150 communities to get food to people in their neighborhoods. Our direct service programming focuses on place-based services that support children, seniors, rural communities and historically underserved neighbors when and where they need a helping hand. Together with our partners, we supplied over 153,000 people with food for 16.4 million meals over the last year.

We also recognize that food alone does not end hunger. By addressing the root causes of hunger through innovative solutions and partnerships, we go beyond food to look holistically at the challenges our neighbors are facing. We envision a bright future, where all our neighbors have nutritious and culturally appropriate food and the opportunity to thrive.

Low-income people are at increased risk for both food insecurity and obesity
