Fixing our Broken Food System to Support the Health of our Planet and People

What we eat matters when it comes to impacting climate change

A globe with red apples What you choose to eat is one of the easiest ways to impact climate change and our planet. The food choices we make every day have a big impact on the environment.

Food and the food system that delivers it are responsible for one-third of all greenhouse gas emissions. One eye-popping example of this: consumption of cheeseburgers is responsible for similar carbon output to all the SUV’s in the United States.

Fruits, beans, vegetables, and nuts are high in fiber and nutrients, but low in saturated fat with zero added sugar. They also have low carbon footprints. So much so that recent research in EAT Lancet notes that doubling the consumption of vegetables, legumes, fruits, and nuts is key to both human and planetary health.

But not everyone has access to food that supports their health and the health of our planet. That’s why PHA has committed to providing 50 million servings of vegetables and fruits to families in disadvantaged communities by 2025.

We’re fulfilling this commitment by working with food banks to increase the amount of healthy food in their inventories, providing healthy plant-based meal kits to families, and distributing produce boxes full of fresh fruits and veggies across the country.

We believe that people living in every zip code across the United States should have access to affordable, healthy, and sustainable food – for the health of people and our planet.
