Ruben E. Canedo

Picture of Ruben Canedo Ruben E. Canedo co-leads the UC Berkeley Food Security Committee and is the Director of Equity Initiatives at UC Berkeley’s Division of Equity & Inclusion. He is a first-generation alumnus of UC Berkeley and a recipient of UC Regents and Chancellor’s Full Scholarship where his academic coursework and publications focus on public higher education, food equity, intersectionality, and systems change.

At UC Berkeley Canedo coordinates the efforts of campus food security working groups on the university’s 10 campuses and conducts research on college student food access and security issues. In these roles, he leads research, prevention, sustainability, and advocacy efforts to address college student food insecurity and homelessness. Canedo was named A University of California 30 under 30 winner for his work in making the food system more nutritious and sustainable and advancing the goals of the UC Global Food Initiative.

In addition to his work at UC Berkeley, Ruben is a frequent speaker and trainer on healing, life journeys, and maximizing performance. He is also a third-degree black belt in traditional karate and helps coach his father’s national team.

In short, Ruben Canedo is a dedicated and passionate advocate for college students, food equity, and inclusion in higher education. His work at UC Berkeley continues to make a difference in the lives of students from all backgrounds.
