PHA Statement on PepsiCo 10-Year Health Drive

Washington, D.C. (October 17, 2016) — Partnership for a Healthier America (PHA) President and CEO Lawrence A. Soler released the following statement today in regard to PepsiCo’s plans to launch a 10-year health plan:

“Children today are projected to have a shorter lifespan than their parents - the first time that has ever happened. It will take a global movement comprised of all of us – industry, the public sector, and individuals – to change this outcome. At the Partnership for a Healthier America, we are encouraged by today’s PepsiCo announcement of plans to ensure that at least two-thirds of all beverages sold globally have 100 calories or less from added sugars per 12-ounce serving. This has the potential to reduce enormous numbers of calories from the market.

"Similarly, PepsiCo’s focus on reducing sodium and saturated fat in its many food products is equally encouraging.

"While much work remains for all of us fighting to help children grow up at a healthy weight, we believe today’s announcement represents a positive step for PepsiCo and we hope that other industry leaders will take similar steps,” said Lawrence A. Soler, PHA President and CEO.

About The Partnership for a Healthier America The Partnership for a Healthier America (PHA) is devoted to working with the private sector to ensure the health of our nation’s youth by solving the childhood obesity crisis. In 2010, PHA was created in conjunction with – but independent from – First Lady Michelle Obama’s Let’s Move! effort. PHA is a nonpartisan nonprofit organization that is led by some of the nation’s most respected health and childhood obesity experts. PHA brings together public, private and nonprofit leaders to broker meaningful commitments and develop strategies to end childhood obesity. Most important, PHA ensures that commitments made are commitments kept by working with unbiased third parties to monitor and publicly report on the progress our partners are making.
