New Study Finds Water Consumption on the Rise

PHA Statement: Natural Marketing Institute Releases Data Showing Increase in Water Consumption Since Q4 2013

Washington, D.C. (August 26, 2014) – The Partnership for a Healthier America (PHA), whose Drink Up initiative encourages everyone to drink more water more often, issued the following statement today from PHA Chief Marketing Officer Drew Nannis. The statement follows a new study from the Natural Marketing Institute, which found that over the last three quarters, American adult consumption of water has increased by more than 68 million 8-ounce servings:

“Today’s research from NMI indicates that consumer trends around drinking more water are continuing to move in the right direction. New data has shown that the average number of daily servings of plain/unflavored water (including bottled, tap and filtered water) consumed in the U.S. is steadily growing. Between the fourth quarter of 2013 and the second quarter of 2014, most demographic groups analyzed saw their average daily consumption increase, jumping from 4.43 to 4.72 servings. Hispanics saw one of the largest increases with a 0.37 jump, while White/Caucasians and African Americans saw a rise of 0.26 and 0.22 respectfully. Also of note, a divergence exists within income breaks, with lower and higher income consumers showing greater consumption increases than those with household incomes of $35k-$100k.

“On the heels of a Nielsen Catalina Solutions (NCS) study last month which found that the first online ad campaign for Drink Up fueled a 3% lift in incremental sales of bottled water among those exposed to the campaign, this new data continues to show that consumers are choosing more water more often.

“To date, the Drink Up message has been seen on more than one billion products and engaged hundreds of millions of people through social media, advertising, events and celebrity ambassadors, as well as more than 60 companies and organizations from every water vertical and beyond sharing Drink Up’s message.”
