Increasing Access to Food that is Good for the Body and the Planet

Child holding the globe shaped as an apple The number of hungry people in our country is growing. Today, more than 38 million people, including 12 million children, in the United States are food insecure.

Many of these people are forced to compromise on how much they eat and - just as important - the quality of what they eat. And according to a recent article by CSIS, climate change and our ever-growing population is threatening to further damage our food system.

Thankfully, there is some good news: The same foods that are good for people - vegetables, fruits, beans, and nuts - are also good for our planet.

Partnership for a Healthier America (PHA) is supporting the health of those struggling to access food as well as the health of our planet through our work with 58 food banks across the nation.

We are helping our partners implement a comprehensive nutrition ranking system and to provide healthier, high-quality, sustainable, and nutritious foods to their communities.

Since 2016, we’ve helped food banks remove 19 million pounds of unhealthy food - food that is highly processed, unhealthy, and unsustainable - and replaced it with 115 million pounds of healthy food.

All families deserve access to affordable, healthy, and sustainable food that promotes well being and the wellbeing of our planet. Our work increases access to food that is good for both the body and the planet.
