Drink Up Sponsors 2015 Quiksilver King Of The Groms Competition

The initiative, which encourages people to drink more water more often, will serve as exclusive beverage sponsor of the international surfing competition

Washington, D.C. (May 7, 2015) – Drink Up, a collaboration of public and private sector companies across the water industry and beyond that encourages people to drink more water more often, today announced its collaboration with Quiksilver, one of the world’s leading outdoor sports lifestyle companies. Drink Up will serve as the exclusive beverage sponsor of Quiksilver’s 2015 King of the Groms (KOTG) event, an international contest for young men surfers under the age of 18.

Launched in 2013, Drink Up is led by the Partnership for a Healthier America (PHA), which works with the private sector and PHA Honorary Chair First Lady Michelle Obama to make healthier choices easier for busy parents and families.

“Sponsoring the 2015 Quiksilver King of the Groms competition is another way that Drink Up is reminding people to drink more water more often,” said PHA Chief Marketing Officer Drew Nannis. “As the exclusive beverage sponsor of a sport so tied to a lifestyle, Drink Up will celebrate these athletes while continuing to remind people that you are what you drink, and when you drink water, you Drink Up.”

Over the course of almost three decades, KOTG has acted as a springboard for the greatest stars of the sport. To give as many young surfers as possible the chance to make a name for themselves, Quiksilver is hosting the easy access, online competition. The idea: to let any young surfer, no matter where he lives on the planet and regardless of experience level, show peers what he can do on a board. To participate, candidates can film a 15-second video segment of their best wave and post it on Instagram @quiksilver, tagged #kingofthegroms.

“We are proud to partner with PHA for the 2015 King of the Groms and support the Drink Up campaign,” said Bob McKnight, Chairman of Quiksilver, Inc. “Through this collaboration, Quiksilver and PHA will encourage our young generation of surfers to live healthy active lifestyles by practicing sports and drinking more water.”

About PHA: The Partnership for a Healthier America (PHA) is devoted to working with the private sector to ensure the health of our nation’s youth by solving the childhood obesity crisis. In 2010, PHA was created in conjunction with – but independent from – First Lady Michelle Obama’s Let’s Move! effort. PHA is a nonpartisan nonprofit organization that is led by some of the nation’s most respected health and childhood obesity experts. PHA brings together public, private and nonprofit leaders to broker meaningful commitments and develop strategies to end childhood obesity. Most important, PHA ensures that commitments made are commitments kept by working with unbiased, third parties to monitor and publicly report on the progress our partners are making.
