11 Questions With...Meb Keflezighi

Meb Keflezighi Editor’s Note: 11 Questions With … is a regular series profiling some of our favorite bloggers, athletes, celebrities and real moms and dads.

Meb Keflezighi is a champion American runner and devoted father of three girls. His storied career includes a 2004 Olympic silver medal in the men’s marathon and winning the 2009 New York City Marathon and 2014 Boston Marathon. On November 1, he will compete in the 2015 TCS New York City Marathon while also serving as a New York Road Runners (NYRR) Team for Kids ambassador. As an ambassador, he is fundraising to provide free NYRR running programs and events for more than 200,000 kids across the U.S. Watch it live and be inspired to reach your own running dreams.

  1. If you were stranded on a deserted island, and only one vegetable grew on that island, what vegetable would you want it to be? Carrots.

  2. What is your healthiest habit? I love to run!

  3. What is your go-to nutritious breakfast? 1 piece of French toast and half of an omelette.

  4. What are the 3 items that are always in your fridge/pantry? Almonds, bagels and eggs.

  5. What is your favorite workout? 6 x mile repeats with 2-minute recovery.

  6. Who is your fitness hero? Rich Levy, my pacer on a bike (71 years old). He is extremely active and has taught me to have fun staying fit (it’s a lifestyle, not a job).

  7. How do you take your water – sparkling, flat, over ice? Flat no ice.

  8. What is your guilty pleasure? Cheesecake.

  9. What is your healthy eating philosophy? Grazing throughout the day instead of eating big portions at each meal.

  10. What is your go-to nutritious family dinner dish? Lasagna with brussels sprouts and salad on the side.

  11. What is the best health advice you’ve ever received? In my diet and exercise course at UCLA, I tracked my diet and exercise for a week. The professor told me that I was lucky I was active and had good genes, because the way I ate, I should have been obese. From that, I learned to become a more disciplined eater, and my performances improved significantly.
